What is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus causes two distinct diseases: HPS (Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome) in the Americas, and HFRS (Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome) across Europe and Asia.

The Andes strain — responsible for the current 2026 outbreak — is the only hantavirus known to spread between humans through close contact, in addition to standard rodent-to-human transmission.
